<image:caption>Yes, death abounds on the way to St Patrick’s Cemetery. Per findagrave.com, “Established in 1869, this cemetery … is near the old Hibernia iron mines and many of the miners are doubtless buried here. It requires a hike up a steep trail from Green Pond Rd and Lower Hibernia Rd. or a hike in from Upper Hibernia Rd. the end of which is closed. The hike up from Green Pond Rd. passes the old mine shaft which is a protected area for bats.” Adam and I hiked the path which missed the bats which was ok with me because rabies.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This Blair Witch-looking thing let us know we were on the right track, because my iPhone X certainly didn’t. If it had been nighttime I would’ve run home. This is known as a cairn, defined as “a mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark, typically on a hilltop or skyline.” Or it’s also “a small terrier of a breed with short legs, a longish body, and a shaggy coat.” Here’s another one:</image:caption>

<image:caption>This the first grave I saw, which seemed rather opulent given the surroundings. It’s for John Heslin, his wife Catharine, and his second wife, Mary (reminiscent of the two Rebeccas from Vail Memorial Cemetery). The design is in keeping with the Victorian look, yet the IHS on top tells me it’s probably Catholic. IHS is often used as an abbreviation for “Jesus” in Greek - “ΙΗΣΟΥΣ." What does one have to do with the other? People buried in the Victorian Era who had money tended to be Protestants who wanted to move away from Catholic iconography, including crucifixes (even crosses) and kind of anything Jesus, ironically.</image:caption>

<image:caption>St Patrick’s Cemetery was connected to St Patrick’s Catholic Church, which burned down in 1910 and was never rebuilt. These graves indeed did belong to the miners (and their families), who worked nearby for the New Jersey Iron Mining Company—now the “abandoned mine shaft that’s a protected area for bats.” At first the miners were mostly Irish immigrants, but they were eventually joined by the English and Scots.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Over the years the cemetery has been brutalized and headstones dismantled and stolen. Once a headstone is knocked off its pedestal, it’s tremendously difficult to right it because of its weight. Also, the grounds had become overgrown, threatening to turn this into a forsaken cemetery. An unloved cemetery is a sad thing, indeed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In 2017 the Friendly Sons of St Patrick of Morris County gathered together to clean things up. Former president Mike Bannon said in the Daily Record that “Hibernia and Mount Hope, were the two main mining centers in Northwestern New Jersey.” [Look at all these Irishmen! I’m probably related to a few. BTW photo courtesy Mike Bannon.] According to Bannon, “That iron ore was one of the richest concentrations of iron in the world. There’s still lots of it in there but it’s so deep and it’s too expensive to dig it out.” Other organizations (I believe the Boy Scouts?) have placed wooden white crosses at spots where headstones used to be, but even those have been stolen or tossed aside.</image:caption>

For someone who gets hideous cases of poison ivy (last year’s even scared the Minute Clinic guy at CVS) this was a bridge too far. I still have a heck of a time figuring out what it looks like —I know the whole leaves of three thing, but dammit they ALL look like leaves of three. So it was time to turn back.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As we left I remarked that during a pandemic, a cemetery is one of the safer places to be. I hope that St Patrick’s Cemetery does not get lost again and that the wide open spaces will allow for enough social distancing to maintain the grounds. Maybe I should call Mike Bannon? Also we raced back (well, walked quickly, there was quite a slope and again, sandals) to make sure our car wasn’t towed. By the luck of the Irish it was still there.</image:caption>

<image:caption>But then happily noticed a third Buis standing tall. (The fallen one is in the distance on the right.) I don’t know who the Buises were—on FindAGrave a Dutch person commented that it was a fine Dutch name, and though I also read it’s French, a quick look on Ancestry uncovered the WWI Registration Card for one Joe Buis, born in Holland and as of 1917 living in Parsippany. This makes sense as there are far more Dutch immigrants in this neck of the woods than French. But because there are no dates or first names on any of these, I don’t know which Buis is which.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This headstone is made of metal. It’s hollow, but I rather like it. It certainly stands up well to lichen. And the good ol’ folks and FindAGrave have informed me that Samuel Righter Trelease’s mother’s maiden name was “Doremus” which is a popular name in Newark, NJ and the name of the street my step-father’s family lived on in Paterson, NJ. (New Yorkers—I’d say it might be the New Jersey equivalent of “Ditmars” or “Ditmas” but don’t quote me on that.) Doremus is also a Dutch name, possibly from the Latin Adoremus, meaning “we adore.” In the 18th and 19th centuries, many Dutch and German immigrant families (like my step-dad’s) worked near the Passaic River as ribbon weavers and dyers. Unfortunately, a lot of the dye ended up in the Passaic, which partly caused its notoriously polluted status now.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I posted this because it’s stood the test of time and also because it describes the wife as a “consort.” Back then (Mary died in 1758) this meant a wife who predeceased her husband, as opposed to “relic” which was another term for “widow.” I’d thought the name was Thomas Osborn but upon closer inspection it says Thomas Orsborn. This may have been in error, as Thomas’ own headstone says “Osborn” and neither my spell check nor I have ever heard of “Orsborn.”</image:caption>

Reminds me a bit of Maxim de Winter. Note the angels on top of both Rebecca headstones—per my previous post, these were hand-carved, and you could often tell the craftsman by the look of the angels’ heads. I believe these were carved by the same person. (Also note: Ebenezer’s headstone is missing its top part where the angel would normally be, so there’s no way for me to tell if the same person carved his. Though my guess is yes.)</image:caption>

<image:caption>These reminded me of the above two. It turns out the taller belongs to Kate Bastedo Farrand, of the same family as Ebenezer and the Rebeccas. “Bastedo” is also often seen in this cemetery, and I thought it interesting that Italians would be found in a Protestant cemetery dating back to the 18th century, but it turns out these Bastedos are … Dutch.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Yet there are indeed Italians in Vail. I maintain cemeteries are a good source of demographic information, especially about different waves of immigrants. It’s clear there were many Dutch immigrants based on the older part of the cemetery, but in this newer neighborhood you’ll find the Mattalianos.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And it must be, as George and Maria Zografos show us with the Orthodox-looking cross. They both passed away in the 1950s. Note the Greek keys surrounding the Greek surname—as also mentioned in my earlier post, that motif was popular in the Victorian Era, and was often seen on obelisks (which are not Greek but Egyptian) and on the monuments of people who were not Greek.</image:caption>

<image:caption>And give you the former name of the cemetery, along with the date of dedication, November 30, 1745. “Burying Ground” is not a term usually used today. Neither is the name “Ichabod,” as in “Ichabod Crane” from Washington Irving’s 1820 story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Coincidentally, “Van Winkle” is the surname of the main character in Washington Irving’s 1819 short story, “Rip Van Winkle.” And as a grammar nerd, I appreciate that they used “comprised” correctly. That’s it from me with quotation marks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I wasn’t able to find much about the cemetery from Googling, nor even from the web page of the church it’s associated with. I was able to learn a lot more by just going there. In addition to Vail, “Condit” is a name frequently seen in cemeteries around here, “Baldwin” was seen a lot in this cemetery, and Adam told me “Benedict” is part of the Livingston Benedict House—a 250-year-old historic home that has actual people living in it today. Note Theodore N. Vail, I’ll get to him in a moment.</image:caption>

<image:caption>It turns out this is the burial spot of Theodore Newton Vail, a member of the Vail family from Ohio, who moved to New Jersey and became the first president of American Telephone & Telegraph, known today as AT&T. Such clout did Vail have that during his 1920 funeral, all phone service in the U.S. stopped for one minute. Vail’s endowment is the reason this is now Vail Memorial Cemetery, where it had previously been Parsippany Burying Ground. Theodore Vail wasn’t the first of his kind to make a name in connectivity—previously, his cousin, Alfred Vail, co-invented the Morse Code with Samuel Morse. (Alfred is buried nearby at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Morristown. Some say he was the real inventor.)</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - Vail Memorial Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>Since this cemetery began accepting burials in the 18th century, it has quite a number of sandstone headstones. Sandstone is my favorite, both for its look and because it weathers well (especially compared to limestone). Except when it comes to lichen. Lichen can be found everywhere, including Antarctica, so they have no problem with New Jersey headstones.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Last winter my frozen hands took this photo, and the name, Ebenezer Grover, piqued my interest, as did the story told on the headstone. But the lichen and the angle of the photo made the ending impossible to read. This is as far as I got: In Memory of Ebenezer Grover who Departed this life January 20 1782 In the 61 Year of his Age A few days before his death he came from New England to m? his Son Reverend Joseph Grover</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - Vail Memorial Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>I’m fascinated by the angel heads that topped 17th and 18th-century headstones. In earlier times they had skulls with wings, but it was decided in the 1700s that cherubic faces made the grieving process go down easier. Though as my friend, Cate Ludlam, who runs Queens’ Prospect Cemetery, noted: “A lot of them tend to look like Richard Nixon.” This is the one on Ebenzer Grover’s grave.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - Vail Memorial Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>Since there was no machinery back then for carving headstones, each were hand carved, so you can often tell the artist by the angels he carved and his style of writing. Many of these craftsmen were based in New Jersey, specifically Newark, but worked for families near and far. As you can imagine, this was an expensive process, so now imagine burial costs plus the cost of hiring a craftsman to do a one-of-a-kind headstone. For all the people you can tell are buried, there are just as many, if not more, with no markers. Trust me on this, I’ve learned it the hard way after walking miles through cemeteries looking for a family burial spot, only to find a blank space.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This photo was taken last winter and this angel is far different from the others. The head is dwarfed by its wings and there are decorative flowers on either side, reminiscent of the Victorian Era, though this headstone predated that.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - Vail Memorial Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>Speaking of the Victorian Era, many cemeteries in this area of New Jersey date to Victorian times, which you can tell by the extravagance. Gone are the sandstone headstones, people were now spending lots of money to show how rich they were through monuments. Elaborate decorations, and a movement away from the crucifix—which was deemed too Catholic— toward Ancient Greece and Egypt prevailed. You’ll see a lot of obelisks from this era (like the ones at the top of this page), sometimes combined with anachronistic designs like Greek keys, and an emphasis on symbolic decorations and sculptures. At the top here is an urn covered by a shroud, the shroud often standing for the gateway between life and death.</image:caption>

<image:title>Writing - Vail Memorial Cemetery</image:title>
<image:caption>This style continued until WWI, when such a display was looked upon as tactless and gauche. This one doesn’t quite illustrate how over the top they could get—there weren’t a lot of this style in Vail Memorial Cemetery—but stay tuned for them.</image:caption>
